5 Signs Your Orangeburg Home Has Old Wiring That Needs Replacing
June 14, 2026 | 8 min read
Most homeowners in Orangeburg do not think about their electrical wiring until something goes wrong. And by then, it is usually an emergency — sparks, tripped breakers, or worse. But there are warning signs that your home's wiring is aging out long before it becomes dangerous.
If your house was built before 1990, here are five signs that it is time to call an electrician.
1. Lights Flicker or Dim When Appliances Run
This is the most common sign of undersized or aging wiring. When your AC compressor kicks on or your microwave runs, lights in the same circuit dim momentarily. A little dip is normal in older homes, but if it happens regularly or the lights flicker persistently, your wiring may not be able to handle the load.
In homes built before the 1980s, 60-amp service was common. Modern homes need at least 100 amps, and most new construction uses 200-amp panels. If you are still running on an old 60-amp fuse box, you are overdue for an upgrade.
2. Outlets Are Warm to the Touch
Walk through your house and touch every outlet. If any feel warm when nothing is plugged in — or after something has been running — that is a sign of loose connections, damaged wiring, or an overloaded circuit. Warm outlets are a fire risk. Do not ignore them.
In Orangeburg's older neighborhoods, we frequently find outlets installed in the 1960s and 1970s. The plastic degrades, contacts loosen, and safety features do not meet modern standards. Replace any 2-prong outlets with modern 3-prong GFCI or tamper-resistant outlets.
3. You Still Have Aluminum Wiring
Aluminum wiring was used in many homes built between 1965 and 1973. The problem is that aluminum expands and contracts more than copper with temperature changes, which causes connections to loosen over time. Loose connections create heat and fire risk.
If your Orangeburg home was built in that window, check your wiring. Aluminum wire is silver-colored; copper is orange-brown. If you have aluminum wiring, approved splice kits (COPALUM or AlumiConn) can safely transition to copper at each connection point without a full rewire.
4. Breakers Trip Constantly
Occasional tripping from overload is normal. But if your breakers trip regularly with normal use — or for no apparent reason — it could mean the breaker itself is worn out, or there is a short somewhere in the wiring.
Breakers are mechanical devices. They wear out after 30 to 40 years. Old breakers can fail to trip when they should (creating a fire risk) or trip too easily (shutting off power for no good reason). If your panel is from the 1970s or earlier, have an electrician evaluate it.
5. You Smell Burning Near the Panel or Outlets
This one is not subtle. A burning smell near your electrical panel, an outlet, or a light switch means something is overheating. Call an electrician immediately. Turn off the breaker for that circuit if you can safely identify it.
What to Do Next
If any of these signs sound familiar, do not wait. Electrical problems do not get better on their own. A licensed electrician can do a complete safety inspection of your panel, outlets, and wiring for a few hundred dollars. It is cheap insurance.
